8th grade recognition night for girls soccer

Last night was 8th grade recognition night for your CMS Lady Spartans. With the game at Connersville Senior High School, it was a terrific opportunity to celebrate this year's 8th grade players: Zoey Klein, Addie Krause, Letti McGuire, and Laney Holmes. Coaches Lindsey Brooks and John Brooks want to take this time to say how proud we are of these girls. Their attitude in practices, commitment to working hard to improve their own game - as well as the team's- never went unnoticed! The opponent on the night was the Lady Cubs of Rushville, in a rematch of our 09.08.2026 game that ended in a 3-3 draw. The game started with Connersville trying a new formation, so it was expected to take a few minutes for the girls to settle in. And settle in they did; in the 5th minute, Bobbi Welter (6th) scored the opening goal of the match and her first of the season. While opportunities continued to present themselves for the Lady Spartans as the half wore on, goals were looking hard to come by. Then, with a cross from the left side of the penalty area, the Spartans drew a penalty kick. Charli Corbitt (7th) stepped up to the spot and buried her PK attempt, making the game 2-0. Rushville, undaunted by the score, drove down the field and seemingly had a first-half goal of their own with a shot slowly rolling across the goal line, until Addi Lovins made a goal-line clearance! This clearance eventually led to an Emma Haffner (6th) breakaway down the field, resulting in her 2nd goal of the season and making it 3-0! The second half saw more of the same from both teams. The Spartans made promising runs down the field but stalled in the final third, or just didn't put their shots on frame. Rushville continued their quick counters, leading to quick shots on goal, and eventually they managed to put one past keeper Zoey Klein. Instead of this being a moment for the Spartans to get nervous, they kept attacking, and a nice sequence from Alyssa Richmond (7th) and Sammi Dawson (6th) led to another Charli Corbitt goal, making it 4-1. While your Lady Spartans made one more goal-line clearance, they saw out the last 8 minutes of the game with the ball rarely leaving the attacking half, largely due to sustained pressure from Alyssa Richmond and Bobbi Welter. Notable Performances: Sammi Dawson, Charli Corbitt, Kam Harmeyer (7th), Laney Holmes (8th), Laney Richards (7th), Addie Krause (8th), Letti McGuire (8th), Reilee Morris (7th), and Aryia Harrison (7th) Larry Shaker Shot Maker Award: Alyssa Richmond Coaches' Picks for Women of the Match: Alyssa Richmond, Emma Haffner, Bobbi Welter, and Addi Lovins
