Thursday night saw your CMS Lady Spartans back in action, in their second away game of the season, this time traveling to Greenfield to take on the Greenfield-Central Jr. High Lady Cougars. Greenfield-Central got off to a fast start, scoring two goals within the first 14 minutes of the match. The Lady Spartans had several attacking runs into the offensive third of the field, generating three first-half corner kicks, but failed to put a shot on goal. The Lady Spartans tightened up on defense, and the half ended 2-0. In the second half, the Lady Cougars scored one more goal. CMS goalkeeper Zoey Klein (8th) made a wonderful diving save but wasn’t able to secure the ball before GC ran onto the ball and put it in the goal. For the next 23 minutes, the game was scoreless, and the match ended 3-0 in favor of Greenfield-Central. While the Lady Spartans didn’t pick up the win, it was a better-played game than their last outing. The CMS midfield played more compact and better linked, and defensive effort improved significantly. Games like these will serve the girls well in their soccer development, giving them experience against a variety of strong teams and playing styles. Notable performances: Bobbi Welter (6th), who got her first start of the season at defensive midfield; Maizey Leach (6th) in midfield; Vivi Grubbs (6th) as left back/left center back; and Mia Cloyd at left wing. Woman of the Match - the coaches' selection for Woman of the Match goes to center back Laney Holmes (8th)! Laney has started the last three games at right center back and has been a steadying presence on the back line. The CMS girls also selected Laney Holmes as the “Larry Shaker Shot Maker” award winner. Congratulations, Laney!
