The CMS 8th grade white basketball team put together a dramatic fourth quarter comeback to defeat Seton Catholic 27-24 last night, erasing a double-digit halftime deficit and finishing the game on top after trailing for most of the contest. The Cardinals controlled the tempo early, jumping out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter and extending the advantage to 18-7 by halftime. The Spartans showed signs of life in the third quarter but still trailed 20-13 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth, CMS turned up the defensive pressure and found timely scoring to outpace Seton 14-4 over the final six minutes, completing the comeback and securing the three-point victory. For the first three quarters, we really struggled on the defensive end and didn’t have much movement offensively. We were a step slow defensively, didn’t rotate the way we needed to, and that put us in tough positions. Offensively, we stood around too much and didn’t move the ball or cut with purpose. In the fourth quarter, our guys finally locked in, they picked up the intensity on defense and finally knocked down some open shots. The energy and execution in the fourth quarter made all the difference and allowed us to finish the game the right way. Now we just need to figure out how to play that way all four quarters. Luke Myers led the Spartans in scoring with 10 points, while Mason Jones added 8. Holland Moore chipped in 3 points, and Colten Schonfeld, Xavier Cooley, and Asher Ervin each contributed 2 points. The Spartans are back in action tonight when they host Morristown at the Fieldhouse. 7th grade is scheduled to start at 6pm.
